Marimekko’s “Stilla” pillow sham is a great accent for your living room or bed room. The over-sized, stylized maroon leaves on a vivid carmine red background, filled with fine, traversing lines are nevertheless a close image of leaves in nature. “Stilla” is a good example of clean, contemporary Scandinavian design at its best. Design: Björn Dahlström, 2007, one of Scandinavia’s most successful designers. He focused earlier in his career on graphic design but today mainly concentrates on industrial design. This sturdy “Pirput Parput” canvas pillow sham (pillowcase) with zipper from Marimekko is smashing in both color and pattern and is practical and versatile. It looks fabulous on your living room couch, in your bedroom, or on your patio furniture. The background is a vivid hot pink that is sprinkled with joyous dots in a darker red. Design: Vuokko Eskolin-Nurmesniemi, who joined Marimekko in 1953. She and her team developed a totally new look in fabric printing – she was a ceramist by training – with use of overlapping colors. Tanja Orsjoki is a young promising designer with a lot of talent. Her vibrant floral “Kuusama” pattern by Marimekko was a Master’s degree project at the University of Art and Design in Helsinki. Her own yard and nature gave her inspiration for this delicate floral composition, and photographs and direct scans of living plants were used to accomplish the pleasing design. The orange-red honeysuckle blossoms with mauve leaves outlined in black with orange stems stand out beautifully against the fuchsia red background. Marimekko’s “Fandango” pattern is an old classic from 1962. It is a good example of one of two themes that designer Maija Isola enjoyed working with in the 1960s: the romantic and ornamental theme, and large, simplified graphic patterns. “Fandango” has been assigned many different color combinations through the years; this one in red and white will definitely brighten up any room. This 2008 pattern by one of Marimekko’s most promising and talented designers, Teresa Moorhouse, is a huge achievement and has everything an animal lover and nature enthusiast could ask for. She teases your nerves by using the powerful bright blue cheetah as a sole character but surprises you with the big cat’s serene and peaceful resting pose. Then you are quickly reminded that a cheetah is alert even when calmly resting on a tree branch, which the designer so carefully expresses in the cat’s watchful eyes. The jungle landscape in the background has elements of fantasy vegetation in orange-red, dark green and light green colors mixed in with the tropical setting. 100% cotton. 25.6x51.2 in (65x130 cm).
